Picture of a lioness and her cub.South Luangwa National Park is one of the best-kept secrets in Africa. Remote and wild, this 9050 square kilometres of pristine wilderness is home to some of the most varied and abundant wildlife the safari traveller could ever hope to find and is fast gaining a reputation as one of the premium safari destinations on the continent.

Morning coffee on the bank of the Luangwa River.Safaris have been conducted in the Luangwa Valley since the 1950's, with the legendary conservationist Norman Carr pioneering walking safaris in this Park. Because of its remote location in Eastern Zambia however, South Luangwa never gained the fame of other safari destinations in Africa. And so for decades the valley has been home to high-quality safari operators, blessed with a tradition of extremely high guiding and service standards.

A picture of a duiker and a baboon. For several years, Chachacha Safaris have been conducting tours to the South Luangwa National Park designed to suit travellers with a more modest budget. Now being operated as a separate safari company, this safari is unique in combining excellent walks, game drives and other activities at the lowest price available, while also providing transfers to and from Chipata. Chipata is the capital of the Eastern Province and is on the border with Malawi. All you have to do is hop on a bus there -- about 8 hours from Lusaka, or 4 from Lilongwe -- spend the night at one of many comfortable lodges, such as Dean's or Mama Rulas and next day you are on safari!
